The debate about authenticity in rock rages on even though nobody knows who the sides are or what the debate is actually about. There are convincingly intelligent people who say roughly Whats the big deal? Rock n Roll is all Shuck n Jive anyway! And there are equally intelligent people who say something like The creative process reaches its pinnacle of expression when a person is most true to the spirit of who or what they are and when such a thing happens even if its a Shuck n Jive artist becoming the ultimate Shuck n Jive artist a la the Lady Gagas [hate to break it to you] of the world it is a magnificent thing to behold so theres always gonna be some degree to which authenticity matters. As a going concern we say ho hum to this debate EXCEPT. Except when it involves an album such as this one about which many in the who cares about authenticity camp would say Early Skinny Puppy moves blended with the minimal deep-psych leanings of late period Spacemen 3 and/or Sonic Boom/Spectrum solo stuff--complete with noise-addled shamanistic poetics and call it a day. And even THAT minor offhanded referential bone-throw is exciting. But also- this is the work of one Mark Treise by all accounts a GENUINELY odd dude the kind of dude for whom reading poetry through echo-located vocal filters over a strangeoid hypnosis-riff alien landscape is as natural an act as eating a sandwich is for the rest of us. And hence we have authenticity bleeding though the grooves however bizarre the contents may be. We know all this about Mark because he came by the shop and played an in-store during West Fest of 2011 that transformed our fair shop through sheer force of personality as manifested through variegated audiovisual freakout apparati into completely unknown terrain. Even for those of us who spend as much as 70% of our waking hours here. And heaven help the poor restroom-seeking regular Johnny Pedestrian who wandered in unprepared during said display. They must have felt very different about the simple necessity-evincing satisfaction of the port-o-potty environment after their brief peekaboo cameo on Soundscape Planet X. Such reality changing powers are to be marveled at not run through the muck like commonplace market-targeted ripoff artist counterparts. Sure a pro rock act could cop similar moves but why would they? Who would benefit? Instead here we have a guy whose singular creative vision has taken three years to see the light of day without assurances that anybody ever will shower righteous and due accolades. All of which is apparently the sought-after niche of Moniker Records. We dont like to editorialize but this is one for the good guys. With a pressing of 300 you have little compunction not to gamble on being WAY ahead of the curve here. Recommended plus one. 037201107
